We are dying slowly everyday but I had never expected it be so soon for me. Fact is every year during this period, I will be enthusiastically anticipating the next long-awaited National Day Song. It is very apparent to me that my hearing is failing as surely as the next comet that will erase human civilization in the soon to arrive end of days.

The mighty island, the unbeatable Singapore Pride, the perfection of perfections. It just cannot be possible that the unwavering red dot is heading in any other direction but up. As such, I can and I will only blame my loss of hearing when my ears and cortex are unable to comprehend the noise of recent years.

So please join me to celebrate this oh-so-joyous occasion of listening to the awesome songs of recent years and reminisce the popular older songs which the vastly superior new songs are obviously based off. /cough

Sitting inconspicuously at the corner of the village meeting hall, in a black baju kurong with green stripes, sat a tiny figure, nervously fingering the intricate hand-sewn yellow flowers. She had risked everything to be here, for this is not the place for single women, especially not now, when the room is primarily filled with men.

Furiously battling back the tears and struggling to hold his head up high, he resisted the urge to glance behind. ‘What had he done? How did it come to this? Why didn’t he listen?’ Roysten pondered on the predicament he had landed himself in. It seemed so long ago, a lifetime of memories, but it was just one day, only yesterday.

‘Hi. I am Roysten and I am from Singapore. These are my friends. Thank you for hosting us.’

‘My name is Siti Amira. I’m only one at home that can speak English. These are my parents. Let me show you to your rooms.’

Time stopped. Those jet black eyes, delicate pink lips, exquisite rosy cheeks and the meticulously braided hair; it was the most beautiful face he had ever seen. It seemed like God had sent him an angel to lead him to eternal bliss.

Then it all happened. The accidental glancing of shoulders as they walked past each other. The jolt of electricity as the tips of their fingers brushed when she handed him a cup. Those stories they shared at the balcony admiring the sunset. Touching her face. The unintended kiss. An awkward moment.

She is a Malay girl from the village in Malaysia and he is a Chinese boy from the city in Singapore. They knew it wouldn’t last. They shouldn’t even have allowed it to start. Uttering a quick sorry and goodnight, he went to bed.

The next morning, without saying a word, he discreetly handed her his shark tooth pendant before he left. He never did look back.

Hungry Ghosts

While impatiently waiting for stuff to totally piss me off, I guess the good old reliable Chinese crap never fails to irk me again. Every time this year, the air gets darker, gloomier and smokier; As if our ghostly friends, families and enemies need a shadowy environment that acts like a blanketing banner that screams ‘WELCOME BACK!’

A stroke of genius, this deliberate deed has a timely benefit to prepare us for the effects of the haze we will experience in the upcoming months. When the haze arrives we would have already coached our lungs for the eventual corruption not dissimilar to the athletes training tirelessly for the Olympics.

For those unfamiliar to the Hungry Ghosts Festival, the Chinese believed that during the seventh month of the lunar calendar, ghosts are released from Hell to roam the land of the living. As such believers will take this opportunity to burn offerings to honour them. In doing so, one golden rule is broken: You can do whatever you want, as long as you do not inconvenience me in anyway. SORRY, FAIL!!!

Amidst the watery red eyes, incessant coughing and menstrual-mucus leakages, it amazes me, personally, once again how an age-old, obsolete and flawed belief would still appeal to so many. Here are some ways which I think the concept is illogical. (IMO Belief = Faith = Bullcrap)

1 Earth is full. Not the ‘car park full’ kind of full but the ‘I’m Takeru Kobayashi and I can gulp down 53 hotdogs in 12 minutes and I’m full’ full. With the number of people (rather Chinese people) that have died over the past few millennia, one can only fail to imagine the number of ghosts in existence. Even if one were to argue that the concept of Hell could be multi-dimensional, releasing the ghosts to our one-dimensional world in one go would technically be analogous to piling the planet in a mile-high stack of apparitions. Sorry we really do not have that much space.

2 Reincarnation. Another noteworthy explanation, in a nut shell, reincarnation simply refers to the ‘recycling of souls’. The soul would be continuously reborn until one reaches Nirvana. There major flaw with this theory is that the world’s population is higher than ever now. Hell cannot keep up with the climbing birth rates. Departures > Arrivals is bad. Hell is either empty, which defeats the purpose of the festival or nobody is attaining Nirvana.

3 Burning of offerings. Logically, at best, only 4 generations of your relatives would remember you after you die, barring you being extremely famous or influential. Unless there is a deposit savings plan in Hell, please be exceptionally frugal as those offerings would have to last an eternity. One idea would be to start burning for yourself every year. When you die you would be the wealthiest ghost with no need to rely on your descendants. Burn stuff that you want! Be creative! Space shuttle (don’t forget the astronaut), atomic bombs, hordes of servants (naked of cause), dinosaurs… you get the idea.

4 Ghosts. To believe that one have to exist as a ghost after one is dead is pathetic. All of us would want to believe that we are all-so-important and after we die, we will return to haunt the living. Ask yourself, do you really want to float for eternity after death? I’ll probably be amused for awhile, for around 5 seconds, and then after that what? No thank you sir, I’ll pass.

IMO this is just another ‘a-dolla-in-da-boxa’ scam. All in all, I would summarise this with these words: Venerable Shi Ming Yi.

3 things that I wished belonged to another culture. Whenever Im near any of these ‘performances’, I cringe and wonder where and what went wrong with this ancient civilisation that boasts 4000 years of history?

Its the excessively loud noise created by the awful and barbaric instruments accompanied by totally old-fashioned, obsolete and tasteless performance. The instruments that I loathe would have to be the cymbals and drums. Ear-splitting and deafening, Im absolutely positive that they were originally designed as Instruments of Torment to be used in torture camps not dissimilar to the gas chambers of WWII. Anyone exposed to this horrific racket for 5 minutes would most definitely develop fits and die from excessive loss of whatever fluids oozing from every possible orifice from their body.

Possibly, by some twist of fate, probably some eunuch trying to murder its lover, these Instruments of Torment were brought to light and the mass of common, tone-deaf and ignorant folks (which coincidently hasnt changed in 4000 years) lapped it up and the Chinese people inherited this curse.

Chinese Orchestra

Without the cymbals and drums its called music. With them, it sounds just like a Chinese funeral. A funeral in the concert hall? Classy.

Lion Dance

Full grown men playing with dolls, I meant manly lion dolls, pretending that they can step in beat with the thunderous drum beats. GAY. Lets not forget the spitting of vegetables, Chinese letters written in oranges and jumping on poles. GAY. I pity the person behind who has to see and smell his partners sweaty butthole. GAY. Lets summarise. Dolls, poles and butts. GAY. However, all the heavily tattooed men and delinquents that form the major advocates of this ‘art form’ seem to differ. To each his own I guess, Im not going near that with 20 foot pole (pun intended).

Chinese Opera

Face it, this is a lost art. Traditionally, people who sing in Chinese opera are men with their nuts removed. So if there are no nutless men on stage performing then I want my money back. You dont hear castrati pieces sung because they dont nut young boys to preserve their pure voices anymore. Simple rule. Follow it.

Conservation? Only if I profit from it.

So theres this sudden reinvigorated trend for conservation. It seems that every government, company, secret society, gang and sheep that craves to be hip wants a piece of this pie.

Do not be deceived.

When it comes to so-called worthy (pun intended) issues, it boils down to the most principal factor that has always manipulated humankind… money. ‘We pledge to recycle, to conserve, to reuse, to recycle, to reduce pollution... blah blah blah’ they say. Well im sure we all missed the latter part, ‘only if its profitable to us.’

Recycle glass, aluminium etc. Sounds noble? Well the fact is that its CHEAPER to produce glass, aluminium and practically all the ‘recycled’ products from recycled materials. Recycled aluminium costs 95% less energy to produce and recycled paper costs 70% less energy to produce. Well nobody would give a damn if this gallant cause is not lucrative. We sure as hell dont know that paper coated with plastic or aluminium foil, and papers that are waxed, pasted, or gummed are usually not recycled because the process is too expensive. Sorry recycling is only done if it saves us MONEY.

Woot… the Beijing Olympics 2008, we vow to reduce pollution. We would have reduced the horrendous pollution that we have neglected since the beginning of time but our Chinese researchers recently discovered that the Chinese people have evolved to be able to survive in conditions of high levels of pollution. However, for the sake of the billions of foreign dollars that this event could fetch, we vow to reduce pollution.

Im sure we dont need to be rocket scientists to figure out the conservation equation. Profit = Conserve. No foreseeable benefits = Feign ignorance.

Dian Fossey, a strong advocate for the saving of mountain gorillas from extinction, was brutally murdered on 26 December 1985. I guess there was an urgent shipment of gorilla hand ashtrays and gorilla steaks to complete.

Until the opinions of the common individual matters; and governments around the world responds responsibly with common sense to blindingly obvious facts, I have thus decided to be a hypocrite and pretend to conserve only when people notice me. Armed with all the easily accessible green information, Im sure I can easily pass of as an expert on conservation. After all, if there is no probable advantage for me, I dont see the need to be a tree-hugging hippy freak.

You Dont Know How I Feel

24 Dec 2006 – As usual Sunday Christmas service is packed and this year is special as the new church building is ready for use. Christmas service ends and the congregation floods out of the service halls towards the ground floor for the usual weekend gossips and catching up with people. I decided to take the stairs from the 6th floor as the lift area seemed crowded. As I was going down the stairs, I was horrified and outraged to see this moron LIMPING down the stairs with one of his legs in a cast! His girlfriend is helping him down the stairs and filling up the rest of the walking space creating a jam in the stairwell as well. WORSE, there were 2 female idiots behind them commenting how CARING she was and how BRAVE he is to take the stairs instead of the lift. If not for the fact that its Christmas and I was feeling uncharacteristically charitable, that ‘Dumb and Dumber’ couple and their equally mentally challenged sidekicks would have gotten a dose of good old Hokkien expletives, guaranteed to cure all foolishness and ignorance.

How many times have we said or heard this all-so-familiar phrase? How proudly individuals claim to experience some encounter so profoundly unique they have exclusive rights to; that only they alone have undergone an (often tragic) event and absolutely nobody else can empathise. If only its true.

In the mere 50000 years that modern humans have existed, we have collectively exhausted practically every encounter there is to experience. As the human race advances, encounters that were originally unique have become common place. Below are 2 such examples.

This may not be infallible but its reasonably safe to assume that if we care to share, we can impart our knowledge and experiences to others. By simply doing so, we collectively, as a civilisation, have been able benefit from the past to create a better future. In reality, the only true unique experience one could selfishly enjoy would be our death.

The next time some major catastrophe emotional trauma strikes or the entire universe has unjustly accused you of some misdeeds or you stumble upon ‘Encounters of the Moronic Kind’, do not hesitate to allow your fellow humans to exercise their empathic ability.

7. Getting High

Many CULTures have over the centuries used various unorthodox methods to get closer to a Higher Power.
